On July 30, 2017 we recognized a World Day to End Human Trafficking. In an effort to call attention to the plague of human trafficking worldwide, the San Rafael Police Department is participating in the Red Sand Project.

The Red Sand Project is dedicated to raising awareness of human trafficking and modern day slavery through participatory artwork.

Overlooked populations – refugees, immigrants, women and children – are most at risk of being enslaved, spending their lives being exploited for the profit of others. To recognize the overlooked, Red Sand Project’s sidewalk interventions invite you to take the time to find and fill a sidewalk crack with red sand and to then document your sidewalk transformation on social media using #RedSandProject.

These interventions remind us that we can’t merely walk over the most marginalized people in our communities — those who fall through the metaphoric cracks. The simple act of placing sand in a crack or posting a photo on social media may seem inconsequential, but small actions can help raise awareness of the issues facing those who are overlooked. The act of filling the cracks promotes conversations about the topic of human trafficking.

The San Rafael Police Department is committed to identifying, locating and arresting those that victimize others through human trafficking. We will accomplish this through undercover operations and proactive policing.  We work in partnership with the community to provide education about the magnitude of human trafficking and its impact in our community. With the help of social services, non-governmental organizations and local and state agencies, we help victims get the support and services needed to escape human trafficking.
