San Rafael Police Investigating Suicide by Gunshot

On Monday, August 21, at 3:28 a.m., the San Rafael Police Department received a call from an unidentified subject in an apartment at 219 Canal Street, San Rafael.  The caller reported a possible deceased person in the apartment.  Officers arrived at the apartment and located a male subject on the floor with an apparent single gunshot wound to his head.  Officers secured the apartment and detained the remaining occupants.  San Rafael Fire Department personnel entered the scene and confirmed the male subject was deceased.  There were no other victims or reported injuries.

San Rafael Police Department personnel obtained preliminary statements from witnesses at the apartment.  A female subject identified the deceased victim as her ex-boyfriend.  The female subject told officers that she and another male friend were at a local night club Sunday evening when she was approached by the ex-boyfriend.  The ex-boyfriend asked her to dance, but she declined and he left without incident.  The female subject and her male friend returned to the apartment after leaving the night club.

According to witness accounts, the ex-boyfriend arrived at the apartment and knocked on the door.  The female subject opened the door and the ex-boyfriend entered the apartment.  There was a brief verbal argument at which point the ex-boyfriend pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the male friend’s head.  The ex-boyfriend fired one shot, missing the male subject as he ducked.  The ex-boyfriend then turned the gun on himself and fired one additional shot.

The investigation is currently ongoing and the deceased subject’s identity is being withheld pending identification confirmation and next of kin notification by the Marin County Sheriff’s Coroner Division.
