Woman Attacks Police Detective with Knife

San Rafael, CA – Just before noon on Tuesday, April 14th, 2020, Megan Kenyon, a 54-year-old San Rafael resident, was arrested for assaulting a police detective with a knife during a follow-up investigation.

At 11:40 am, a San Rafael Police Detective went to an apartment complex in the 100-block of Merrydale Road in San Rafael to do a follow-up investigation and look for Megan Kenyon, who was a reported missing person.

The detective knocked on the apartment door several times, announcing that he was a police officer and wanted to do a welfare check of Kenyon. There was no immediate answer, and the detective continued to knock and announce his presence. A few moments later, the detective heard movement and then observed Kenyon open the door.

When the door opened, Kenyon began yelling and was making slashing motions at the detective with what initially appeared to be a large kitchen knife. Kenyon advanced forward and was within 2 feet of the detective when she was making the slashing motions. It was apparent that Kenyon was trying to harm the detective, and with little room to react, the detective was able to grab Kenyon’s arm that was holding the knife and knocked it out of her hand. The detective was then able to subdue Kenyon and called for emergency police assistance.

Officers arrived on the scene and assisted with taking Kenyon into custody. Kenyon was arrested for Penal Code Section 245(c) - Assaulting a Peace Officer with a Deadly Weapon, and was booked into the Marin County Jail.

A witness observed the incident and reported that he had been scared by what he saw. The witness stated that Kenyon tried to stab the detective and was surprised that the detective was able to wrestle the knife away.

The knife was recovered from the ground and was determined to be a sharpened nine-inch pie knife. The police detective and Kenyon were not injured in the incident. The detective’s name is being withheld as this case is still under investigation and pending administrative review.
