Two Men Arrested After Brief Standoff with Police

San Rafael, CA – On the afternoon of Monday, April 20th, 2020, John Henry Musto, a 22-year-old San Rafael resident, and Dennis George Jones Jr., a 44-year-old San Rafael resident, were arrested after being in a brief standoff with police following an altercation that occurred at an apartment complex pool.

At 3:50 PM, SRPD Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from two apartment complex employees reporting that two subjects, John Henry Musto and Dennis George Jones Jr., had become belligerent and threatening.  The employees stated that they asked both men to leave the closed pool area of the apartment complex located on Cresta Way.  While the subjects were leaving, Musto challenged both employees to fight, pulled a pocket knife out, and began making stabbing motions at both employees.

San Rafael Police Officers arrived on the scene and were directed to an apartment where both men were last seen.  Based on the investigation, it was determined that Musto had committed a felony assault with a knife on the two employees.

Officers attempted to contact Musto at the apartment where he was located.   Musto refused to come out, and Jones declined to comply with requests to have Musto exit.  Both men remained belligerent and uncooperative.

On-duty Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT) members began speaking to both Musto and Jones and tried to gain their cooperation.  Musto continued to refuse, and Jones prevented police from contacting Musto by harboring him in the apartment.

During the incident, a NIXLE Alert was broadcast asking people to shelter-in-place and to stay out of the area due to the police activity.

Additional officers were called to the scene along with two San Rafael Police K-9’s.  CNT members negotiated with both men for close to 90 minutes when Musto and Jones finally decided to walk out of the apartment.  Both Musto and Jones were taken into custody without incident.

Musto was booked into the Marin County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon, resisting/obstructing a police officer, and public intoxication.  Jones was also booked into the Marin County Jail for aiding and concealing a wanted felon, resisting/obstructing a police officer, and public intoxication.

No one was injured as a result of this incident.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call San Rafael Police at (415) 485-3000. Tips can also be made online at http://www.srpd.org/tips.
