Suspect Arrested for Assault with a Deadly Weapon

On April 29, 2020 at about 8:19 am, SRPD units responded to a residence in the 300 block of Sylvia Way, San Rafael, on the report of a physical fight in progress.  The reporting party told SRPD dispatchers that Castanya Tompkins was physically assaulting another occupant of the residence and that she also had a knife in her possession.  Tompkins had left the residence prior to SRPD arrival, leaving the knife behind at the residence.

SRPD Officers interviewed the victim who said that she did not like that Tompkins and her boyfriend were at the residence and that Tompkins was upset because she felt that the victim owed her money.  When the confrontation happened, the victim told SRPD Officers that Tompkins punched her four times in the face.  At that time, the reporting party told Tompkins that he was calling the police.  All of the sudden, Tompkins left the room they were all in but came back about a minute later.

When Tompkins returned to the room, she was holding a large kitchen knife in her hand.  She threw the knife at the victim who was about 8-9 feet away, narrowly missing the victim.   Tompkins then left the residence and went in an unknown direction

While SRPD Officers were at the residence interviewing the victim and reporting party, other SRPD Officers were in the area looking for Tompkins.  She was located in the area of Lea Drive and Regina Way in San Rafael, about fifteen minutes after she left the residence.  Tompkins denied that there was any physical altercation at the residence and denied that she had a knife at anytime.

Tompkins was arrested and placed in a marked patrol car.  A short time after Tompkins was placed in the patrol car, an SRPD Officer noticed that Tompkins had removed her sealtbelt and moved to the opposite side of the patrol car than she was initially placed at.  The officer told Tompkins to return to the proper side of the patrol car so she could secure the sealtbelt for the transport to the jail.  Tompkins refused and the SRPD Officer, with the assistance of another SRPD Officer, opened the patrol car door on both sides to secure Tompkins with the seatbelt.

When the patrol car door was opened, Tompkins attempted to escape custody by exiting the patrol car.  The officer placed their hands on Tompkins shoulders which caused her to fall on her back in the back seat of the patrol car.  At that time, Tompkins kicked at the officer and struck the officer twice, once in the chest and once in the eye.  Tompkins was secured in the back of the patrol car and was taken to the Marin County Jail without further incident.  The officer was not injured and did not require medical attention.

Castanya Tompkins, a 23 year old resident of San Rafael was booked at the Marin County Jail for Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Battery on a Peace Officer, and Battery on a Person.
