Suspects Arrested for Grand Theft, Conspiracy

In response to the issue of bicycle theft in the community, The San Rafael Police Department Special Operations Unit (SOU) conducted a bicycle theft prevention operation on Thursday February 18th, 2021.  The SOU Team is staffed by a Police Sergeant, two Police Officers, and a Mental Health Outreach Liaison. They typically work on quality-of-life issues mainly in the downtown corridor of San Rafael.

SOU Officers locked a bait bicycle to different high visibility locations within San Rafael.  In this specific instance, the bicycle was locked to a railing at the entrance to a building in the 700 Block of Irwin Street in San Rafael.  Officers observed Demetrious Holmes and Juanita Butterfly in a vehicle at the location.  The two subjects looked at the bicycle and left the location.  The SOU Officers watched them return a short time later with bolt cutters.  Holmes was seen removing the lock securing the bicycle to the railing and was detained as he attempted to ride the bicycle from the location.  Butterfly was detained in a parking lot a short distance away.

Holmes was arrested for grand theft, possession of burglary tools, conspiracy to commit a crime, and parole violation.   Butterfly was arrested for grand theft, conspiracy to commit a crime, driving on a suspended license, and felony warrants out of Siskiyou and Humboldt Counties.  Both subjects were booked at the Marin County Jail.

Demetrious Holmes, a 29-year-old male with no fixed address.

Jasmine Butterfly, a 38-year-old female from Santa Rosa

The SOU Team will be periodically conducting these sting operations at various locations in San Rafael in order to address the ongoing issue of these types of thefts.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call San Rafael Police at (415) 485-3000. Tips can also be made online at http://www.srpd.org/tips.
