Youth Swim Coach Arrested for Meeting a Minor for Lewd Purposes

On Friday, May 6, 2022, the San Rafael Police Department hosted a countywide human trafficking operation intended to arrest buyers and traffickers as well as rescue, educate, and offer services to victims of human trafficking.

Leading up to the human trafficking operation, investigators placed ads on adult websites seeking buyers who were looking for juveniles for sexual services.  Detectives began communicating via text with a male who expressed an interest in meeting with a 16-year-old female for sex.  The subject agreed to a price and a date/time to meet up with the juvenile, but he failed to show up for the meeting.  After the human trafficking operation was finished, detectives continued their investigation into this subject.

The investigation revealed that the phone number was registered to John Chipponeri, a 59-year-old resident of San Rafael.  Further investigation revealed that Chipponeri is a swim coach at a local school and also teaches swimming for a private swim club.

On Wednesday, May 25th at about 3:10 pm, a traffic stop was conducted on Chipponeri in the area of Lindaro Street and Andersen Drive in San Rafael.  He was detained and brought back to the San Rafael Public Safety Center for questioning.  During the interview, Chipponeri made several admissions regarding this case.  He was arrested for 288.4(a)(1) PC-Meeting with a Minor for a Lewd Purpose.  Chipponeri was booked at the Marin County Jail.

There is no booking photo to release at this time.  If you have press inquiries, please contact Lieutenant Dan Fink at 415-485-3148.
