Mail Theft

The San Rafael Police Department has observed an increase in the number of reported mail thefts. At approximately 3:16 a.m. on June 2, 2017, a neighborhood surveillance camera on Southern Heights Boulevard captured video of a possible suspect vehicle. While the identity of the suspect could not be determined, the vehicle appears to be a late model, dark colored, four-door sedan with a spoiler on the trunk. A passenger exited the vehicle and checked curbside mailboxes.

The following will help to protect you from mail theft:

  • Do not leave mail in your delivery unit overnight.  This is usually when thieves attack.
  • Use neighborhood watch and community review programs to deter vandals.
  • Send outgoing mail at your local post office or hand it directly to your mail carrier.

Be alert for suspicious people or vehicles in the area of your delivery unit; if you see suspicious activity, please call the San Rafael Police Department, (415)485-3000.

The United States Postal Service offers a service called Informed Delivery. This service provides subscribers with email notification of mail delivery which includes images of what has been delivered to their mailbox. The service is free from the USPS: https://informeddelivery.usps.com/box/pages/intro/start.action

The United States Postal Inspection Service is the Federal Law Enforcement Agency which investigates all crimes which have a nexus to the United States Postal Service.  To report mail theft and for other resources provided by the United States Postal Inspection Service please visit their website at https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov or call (877) 876-2455.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call San Rafael Police at (415) 485-3000. Tips can also be made online at http://www.srpd.org/tips.
