Case Number: SR20-0942

Suspects Arrested for Armed Robbery

On February 2, 2020 at about 8:15pm, two suspects entered The Home Depot at 111 Shoreline Parkway, San Rafael just before closing.  One of the suspects was armed with a handgun and approached a cashier.  The suspect ordered the cashier to give him the money from the registers.  After cash was obtained, the suspects ran out of the store into a waiting vehicle which was believed to a black car, possibly a Dodge.  SRPD Units responded to the store but were unable to locate the suspects or the vehicle that night.

The case was assigned to San Rafael Police Detective Corporal James Dooley.  Detective Corporal Dooley and other SRPD Detectives conducted follow up interviews, obtained video evidence, and executed search warrants in an attempt to identify the suspects.  Through his investigation, Detective Corporal Dooley determined that Gerard Hood, a 37 year old resident of San Pablo was one of the people who participated in the robbery.  An arrest warrant for Hood and a search warrant for Hood’s residence was obtained.

On February 20, 2020 at about 10:15am members of the San Rafael/Novato SWAT team who were supported by the San Rafael/Novato Crisis Negotiations Team and members of the San Pablo Police Department, executed the search warrant at Hood’s residence in the 2000 block of 19th Street in San Pablo.  After the scene was secure, SRPD Detectives searched the residence and found evidence related to the robbery at Home Depot.

Just prior to the search warrant being executed, SRPD Detectives, assisted by the United States Probation Department, arrested Hood at the Federal Building located at 1301 Clay Street in Oakland.  Additionally, SRPD Detectives learned that Hood was dropped off at the Federal Building by a subject in a black Dodge Charger similar to the one used in the robbery at The Home Depot.

SRPD Detective Oscar O’Con was in the area in a marked SRPD Police Unit and located the vehicle, which was driven by Thomas Garcia Rodriguez, a 22 year old resident of Richmond.  Assisted by the Oakland Police Department, Detective O’Con took Rodriguez into custody and his vehicle was impounded for evidence and towed to the San Rafael Police Department.

Detective Corporal Dooley conducted follow up interviews with Hood and Rodriguez.  When those interviews were finished, they were both booked at the Marin County Jail for Robbery and Conspiracy to Commit a Crime.

The San Rafael Police Department would like to thank the Novato Police Department, the San Pablo Police Department, the Oakland Police Department, the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force, and the United States Probation Department for their help in apprehending both suspects.

There is still one suspect outstanding and this investigation is continuing.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call San Rafael Police at (415) 485-3000. Tips can also be made online at http://www.srpd.org/tips.
