Suspect Arrested in Less than 24 Hours After Shooting

San Rafael, CA – On Monday, 04/15/2024, a male victim arrived at the police department and reported that a suspect had shot at him while he was in his car at Rice Drive near Andersen Drive.  Police officers and detectives continued to investigate the case and were able to identify the suspect, Efrain Hernandez-Gonzalez, a 26-year-old San Rafael resident.  On Tuesday, 04/16/2024, just after 4:00 PM, Hernandez-Gonzalez was located and taken into custody without incident at Andersen Drive and Irwin Street.

On Monday, just after 7:30 PM, a male victim came to the police department and reported that a known suspect had shot at him while he was in his car in the area of Rice Drive and Andersen Drive.  The victim was not injured.  It was believed the incident happened one hour before the report was made.

Based on the preliminary investigation, it was learned that the suspect and victim had an ongoing dispute that finally culminated in the suspect shooting at the victim.  The suspect walked to the front of the victim’s car, pointed a handgun, and then fired a single shot into the windshield.  The victim observed this happening and was able to duck out of the way just before the gunshot was fired.  After the shooting, the victim fled and eventually drove to the police department to report the incident.

Police officers and detectives worked on leads and were able to identify Hernandez-Gonzalez as the suspect.  Hernandez-Gonzalez was considered armed and dangerous based on the nature of the incident.

On Tuesday, just after 4:00 PM, detectives spotted Hernandez-Gonzalez on Andersen Drive.  SRPD, with the assistance of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, maintained surveillance of him until arrest units arrived.  Hernandez-Gonzalez was arrested by uniformed officers at the corner of Irwin Street and Andersen Drive without incident.

Hernandez-Gonzalez was interviewed by police detectives and then booked into the Marin County Jail for attempted murder, resisting a peace officer, violating the terms of his probation, and failing to register as a sex registrant.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call San Rafael Police at (415) 485-3000. Tips can also be made online at http://www.srpd.org/tips.
