3 Arrested and 12 Cited at San Rafael Fourth of July Weekend DUI Checkpoint

San Rafael, CA – Two people were arrested for DUI, one person was arrested and released for driving on a suspended license, and twelve people were issued citations for driving without a license while conducting a DUI checkpoint on Friday, July 2, 2021.

The checkpoint was held in San Rafael on Lincoln Avenue at the intersection with Grand Avenue from 6:00 PM to 11:30 PM.

Over 650 vehicles passed through the checkpoint resulting in 43 vehicles being contacted.  Of the 43 vehicles that were stopped, two resulted in DUI arrests.  One of the DUI arrests was of a drug related nature where the driver admitted to using fentanyl and methamphetamine.  One additional arrest was of a person who was found knowingly driving on a suspended license.  That person was arrested and released with a citation.

Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired.

The San Rafael Police Department is committed to keeping the public safe when they are traveling.

SRPD will hold another DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint close to the Labor Day holiday.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
