SRPD Arrests Intoxicated Man for Discharging Handgun

San Rafael, CA – After receiving a call that a man had fired several shots into the ground outside of a vehicle at an apartment complex parking lot in the 300 block of Canal Street, Nardo Deleon, a 57-year-old San Rafael resident, was arrested and booked into the Marin County Jail.  There were no injuries as a result of this isolated incident.

Just after 9:00 AM on Monday, 04/29/2024, the San Rafael Police Department received a call about possible gunshots being fired in the 300 block of Canal Street. During the call about the incident, a witness observed a male suspect firing multiple shots toward the ground and was then observed throwing the handgun into a vehicle.  The caller provided the description of the suspect, who was identified as Nardo Deleon.

Officers immediately responded to the scene and surrounded the apartment complex parking lot.  With the assistance of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office UAV Drone Unit, a drone was used to observe the vehicle Deleon was last seen getting into.

After the drone was deployed, officers approached the vehicle and observed Deleon unresponsive in the driver’s seat.  Due to the necessity to safeguard the public from future incidents and harm with the firearm, officers approached the vehicle with an armored shield. Officers attempted to get Deleon to follow directions, but he would not cooperate.  Officers continued their approach, opened the car door, and took Deleon into custody.  Deleon was arrested without incident or injury.  Once in custody, Deleon was observed to be intoxicated.

During the investigation, officers learned that Deleon had fired the handgun up to 14 times due to the amount of bullet shell casings that were found at the scene.  Additionally, police detectives obtained cell phone video from a witness where Deleon was seen manipulating the gun in the parking lot.  No one was injured during the incident.

Deleon was booked into the Marin County Jail on felony willful and negligent discharging of a firearm in public, carrying a loaded firearm in public, and public intoxication.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call San Rafael Police at (415) 485-3000. Tips can also be made online at http://www.srpd.org/tips.
