Armed Attack Leads to Pursuit, Arrest of Suspects, and Recovery of Guns
San Rafael, CA – SRPD Officers arrested Jechivon Anay Cifuentes-Diaz, a 22-year-old San Rafael resident, Jovardo Esmar Cifuentes-Diaz, an 18-year-old San Rafael resident, and a juvenile on a variety of serious felony charges after being involved in a violent armed attack in Terra Linda and leading officers in a pursuit that ended in San Francisco. Guns involved in the attack were also recovered.
Just after 2:15 P.M., on Wednesday, 02/12/2025, SRPD received an emergency call about an attack that had just occurred in the Terra Linda Safeway parking lot. It was reported that three suspects, two adults, and one juvenile, confronted two victims and got into a fight. During the fight, the suspects displayed handguns and struck one of the victims in the head with the butt of a gun. Fortunately, no shots were fired. The suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle.
SRPD Officers were dispatched and arrived within minutes. Due to the serious nature of the call, additional SRPD officers placed themselves in key locations throughout San Rafael to intercept the suspects. Simultaneously, police detectives used the automated license plate reader camera network to identify the suspect vehicle.
Shortly after, an SRPD officer in downtown San Rafael, looking for the suspects, observed the vehicle and attempted to stop it. The suspects instead fled from the officer, and a pursuit began. The pursuit went onto the southbound US-101 freeway. As the pursuit headed towards the Golden Gate Bridge, California Highway Patrol officers took over the pursuit. SRPD officers continued to follow. The pursuit ended on Presidio Parkway in San Francisco when the suspects’ vehicle had a mechanical engine failure.
All three suspects attempted to run from the vehicle but were quickly captured without further incident. During the arrest of the suspects, one of them was found to be wearing a backpack that had three loaded handguns and one loaded assault weapon. One of the guns was determined to be a ghost gun, meaning that it was not serialized. Officers also found extended ammunition magazines.
The two adults were booked into the Marin County Jail, and the one juvenile was booked into the Marin County Juvenile Hall. All three suspects are being charged with crimes that include felony assault with a firearm, brandishing of a gun, possession of an un-serialized gun, possession of large-capacity ammunition magazines, evading officers, and resisting arrest. The two adults are also being charged with felony child endangerment.
The victim struck in the head was not seriously injured and did not require hospitalization. During the preliminary investigation, the suspects appeared to be familiar with the victims. This is an active case, and SRPD is continuing to investigate the motive behind the attack.
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call San Rafael Police at (415) 485-3000. Tips can also be made online at http://www.srpd.org/tips.
