Early Morning Armed Robbery Suspect Captured; Second Suspect Wanted
San Rafael, CA – This morning, Juan Lopez-Lopez, a 29-year-old San Rafael resident, was arrested by San Rafael Police officers after committing an armed robbery alongside a second armed suspect in San Rafael’s Canal Neighborhood. Investigators are working on leads to identify the second suspect. The victim was not physically injured.
At 5:30 AM, an officer on patrol in the area of Canal Street and Kerner Boulevard was waived down by a victim reporting that he had just been robbed at gunpoint by two armed male suspects. Officers learned that the armed suspects each had a handgun and demanded property from the victim. The victim feared for his safety and was forced to cooperate with the suspects’ demands. After the victim was robbed, both suspects fled the scene on bicycles.
Additional officers in the surrounding area located one of the suspects within minutes. The officers tried to stop the suspect, but he attempted to evade while riding a bicycle. Officers surrounded the fleeing suspect, and he eventually stopped. The suspect, identified as Juan Lopez-Lopez, was taken into custody without further incident.
Officers retraced Lopez-Lopez's flight path and found a bag he had discarded behind a set of bushes. Officers found a loaded handgun in the bag. The handgun is believed to be stolen, and investigators are working to determine its origins.
The second armed suspect involved in the incident was not immediately located. Investigators are using leads to identify him.
The victim was not physically injured in this incident.
Lopez-Lopez was booked into the Marin County Jail for felony armed robbery, carrying a loaded firearm in public, evading an officer, and possession of a controlled substance. He is currently being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.
