Employee Dispute Leads to Homicide, Suspect Arrested

San Rafael, CA – On Monday, October 12, 2026, San Rafael Police Department (SRPD) Detectives arrested Justin Amilcar Gutierrez-Navarette, a 20-year-old Richmond resident, in connection with a homicide that occurred at a business in the Northgate One Shopping Center. The incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute between two employees that escalated into a physical altercation and fatal stabbing.

Shortly after 1:00 PM, SRPD received an emergency call reporting an unconscious male who appeared to have fallen in the 700 block of Las Gallinas Avenue. San Rafael Police and Fire Department personnel immediately responded and located a male victim suffering from an apparent stab wound. First responders started life-saving measures, and the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

SRPD officers and detectives immediately began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Based on the victim's clothing, investigators determined that he was an employee of a business located within the Northgate One Shopping Center.

Shortly after the investigation began, Gutierrez-Navarette contacted SRPD and arranged to surrender himself to police. Gutierrez-Navarette cooperated with detectives and was interviewed regarding his involvement in the incident. Investigators learned that Gutierrez-Navarette and the victim were coworkers who had been involved in an ongoing dispute. On October 12, the dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Gutierrez-Navarette stabbed the victim. Following the altercation, the victim fled through the rear entrance of the business before collapsing outside in the 700 block of Las Gallinas Avenue.

Based on the evidence and information obtained during the investigation, SRPD Detectives arrested Gutierrez-Navarette. He was subsequently booked into the Marin County Jail on a charge of murder. Investigators have identified the individuals involved, and there are no outstanding suspects in connection with this homicide.

The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The Marin County Coroner's Office is responsible for releasing the victim's identity once the appropriate notifications have been completed.
