Neighborhood Advisory for Burglary Series in the Canal Neighborhood

Since December 20, 2017 the San Rafael Police Department has received eight reports of residential burglaries in the Canal Neighborhood of East San Rafael.

The burglaries have occurred during daytime hours, when residents are not home. The suspect(s) typically gain entry through unsecured doors or windows and the primary target has been money.

The department is actively investigating these cases. We are advising residents to take precautions to protect themselves from becoming a victim. Many cases involve the suspect going from house to house looking for unlocked doors or windows.

Often the suspect will knock on the door of a residence to see if anyone is home. If someone answers they will ask for a person, pretending as if they have come to the wrong residence. In order to make you and your home less of a target, please keep in mind the following:

  • Keep all doors and windows locked, even if you are at home, will only be gone a short time or are “just going next door.”
  • Make sure all locks are functioning properly.
  • Be alert to persons going from house to house, looking in windows or knocking on doors.
  • Report suspicious persons to the police. Make note of the person’s physical description, clothing, tattoos or other distinguishing characteristics and give that information to the police.
  • Keep all entrances to your residence well-lit and maintain landscaping to prevent hiding places.

If you have any information regarding these crimes please contact the San Rafael Police Department (415)485-3000, or via the silent witness form on our web page. www.srpd.org
